10 Jobs after GATE Aerospace 2017

GATE 2017 results are out and admissions for Jul-Aug 2017 batch based on GATE score have started in most institutes. Only a few tens of students with really good score will get into their dream institutes - IISc or IITs. The admission process is very complex and it surely brings heartbreak for many. If you've got a low score this time, you might already be sad. Preparing for GATE 2018 is now what you might be thinking in deepest corner of your mind, but before that let us tell you what else can be done this year - The 10 Jobs after GATE 2017.

ACADEMICS PROGRAMS

Opt for these if you are planning to study further and don't want to wait till 2018 admissions. Plus you got a 500+ score in GATE 2017.

1. IIT Madras January intake (for MS & PhD)

IITM admissions take place twice an year. In January 2018 fresh MS & PhD batches would start, forms will be available in Sep-Oct 2017. Keep looking for that. Please note its not ME/M.Tech., its MS & PhD.

2. IIT Bombay January intake (for PhD)

PhD admissions in nearly all the institutes take place twice an year. Look out for IITB January PhD admission forms in Sep-Oct 2017.

3. AcSIR Labs January intake (for PhD)

The Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR) was established by an Act of Parliament. The Participating CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) Labs give M.Tech-PhD and PhD degrees. PhD admissions are conducted twice an year. Lookout for these forms.

ACADEMICS-CUM-JOB PROGRAMS

Opt for these if you wish to study further (not urgently), don't want to waste your current time at home and earn some experience & pocket money.

4. Project Assistanceship at IITs

Professors at IITs are engaged in numerous projects and they need Project Assistants from time to time. Keep looking for these vacancies on IIT websites or you can also contact a professor directly if you like his area of work. Profiles of all the professors are available on IIT websites, spend some time to search someone suitable for you.

You may get a remuneration anywhere between Rs. 15000-30000 per month depending on the type of project you are in. These professors can also recommend you for MS/PhD vacancies in good universities abroad since they have good links with professors there. You'd have fair chance of studying abroad with full scholarship. There is, however, no timeline when you can take admission - it may be one year or two years or even three, depending on the project you choose and/or your raport with professor.

TEMPORARY JOBS

These are temporary jobs in your field with a time span of 2 years max.

5. JRF at DRDO

Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has 54 labs all over India and around 7-8 of these are working in the field of aerospace. These require Junior Research Fellows (JRF) from time to time to work on their projects. JRFs get a salary of Rs. 25000-33000 per month.

Keep looking for vacancies on DRDO website http://www.drdo.gov.in/drdo/English/index.jsp?pg=homebody.jsp under Careers tab.

6. Project Assistanceship at ADA

Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Bangalore is the nodal agency for development of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). It rolls out Project Assistant offers from time to time. Salary is around Rs. 25000 per month. Keep looking for vacancies on ADA website https://www.ada.gov.in/default.html under Recruitment tab.

7. Jobs at IITB through IRCC

The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) co-ordinates and facilitates all research and development activities at IIT Bombay. They announce Project Assistant & JRF vacancies regularly.

Website : http://www.ircc.iitb.ac.in/IRCC-Webpage/rnd/JobOpportunities.jsp

8. Jobs at IITM through IC&SR

The Centre for Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC&SR) takes care of projects given by Industry to IIT Madras. They announce Project Assistant & JRF vacancies regularly.

Website : https://icandsr.iitm.ac.in/

PERMANENT JOBS

9.Jobs at HAL, NAL, ISRO

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) & ISRO recruit Engineers/Scientists every year. Keep looking for vacancies on their websites.

You'd start with an initial salary of Rs. 40,000+ with many other facilities applicable to govt. employees. And no doubt the type work will be very challenging. Be cautious - this whole entry process (including exam, interview, results) may take upto one year so keep preparing for GATE 2018 simultaneously, in case.

10. Jobs in Private companies

This is a difficult process and only meant for those who persevere. Keep applying in private companies - send biodatas, make calls, send emails. You may have to face rejection, failure in interviews and many other difficulties but, in worst case, after 4-5 failures you'd definitely get into a good company.

PARALLEL OPTION

11. Prepare for GATE Aerospace 2018 - WITH DEDICATION

You can continue preparation of GATE Aerospace 2018 with any of the 10 options above and it is recommended that you keep the preparation on. However, if you are hard bent to study further then don't think twice. Just sit at home for another year and dedicate yourself to GATE Aerospace 2018 which will be held in February 2018.

6 months is a decent time to master your preparation and clear GATE.

Admission process after GATE Aerospace 2017

GATE 2017 scores will be out on 27 March, and immediate worry for everyone is Admissions!! We have tried to simplify whole process for you; just read on.

In GATE exam, you get 4 details on your result card:

  1. Marks out of 100
  2. Your All India Rank (AIR)
  3. Score out of 1000 for Current year

While 1 & 2 can make you happy (or sad), they don't have any say in admission process. What is considered for admissions is score out of 1000. Since GATE score is valid for 3 years, the score is issued for current year and next year/s. So your year 2016 score is going to matter for admissions this year.

Colleges

Prominent institutes offering admission in Aerospace departments are:

  1. IISc Bengaluru,
  2. IIT Bombay (IITB) Mumbai,
  3. IIT Madras (IITM) Chennai,
  4. IIT Kharagpur (IITKgp),
  5. IIT Kanpur (IITK),
  6. Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advance Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore
  7. Indian Institute of Space Science & Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram
  8. Defence Institute of Advance Technology (DIAT), Pune
  9. Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai
  10. Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra
  11. Indian Institute of Engineering and Science Technology (IIEST), Shibpur.

Cutoff & Seats (ME/M.Tech.)

IISc, IITB, IITM, and IITKgp offer direct admission to ME/M.Tech. program on the basis of gate score. Usually candidates upto AIR 45 get admission. IITK conducts a written test before giving admission. In this test 70% weightage is given to gate score and 30% to the test, Candidates with rank upto 250 can get call for this test. It is seen that AIRs upto 100 get seat in one of these colleges, generally.

Candidates with AIR 100+ can get call from DIAT and IIST for written test and /or interviews. And there's a good chance of getting admission till AIR 150.

At MIT (Madras institute of Technology), Anna University, admission is through GATE and TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test). The forms are available in the month of July and counseling is done in the month of August. First preference is given to the GATE qualified student who has filled the form for common counseling. The students who have not been able to qualify GATE have to clear TANCET 2017 for the admission to the department of Anna University and approved state colleges. Compare to all other colleges of Tamil Nadu, MIT has good opportunities.

At BIT, Mesra 12 seats are for gate qualified and 12 seats are for non-gate students and these seats are interchangeable. Preference is given to the GATE qualified students and then to non-gate student.

You can check 2013 & 2014 cut-offs by clicking here.

MS & Direct Ph.D. Admissions

IITM, IISc and JNCARoffers research based programs at master’s level (Masters in Science, MS). The duration of the course is 2-3 years. It is a research based program so the duration depends on completion of your project. If you can finish it in 1.5 years, you can get MS degree in 1.5 years too. But it generally takes anywhere between 2 to 3 years. If you are highly interested for research based programs then you are encouraged to apply to these programs independently. They will shortlist on the basis of gate score and you will be called for written test and/or interview accordingly.

Some IITs like IITB, IITM also offer direct PhD after BE/B.Tech. For this you have to fill the form separately. They will shortlist you on the basis of gate score and you will be called for written test and interview. In some cases, written test are ignored and direct interview is taken.

These admissions take place twice an year. July-August and December-January.

Should I go for M.Tech or MS or direct Ph.D?

After GATE exam, one can take admission to M.Tech/ME programs offered by IITs, IISc, and Govt/Centralized/Deemed Universities. But these days, many programs such as MS [Masters of Science in Engineering – by Research], M.Tech [Master of Technology – by Research], D.PhD [Direct Ph.D.] are offered by many IITs and IISc apart from their regular M.Tech programs. The structure, criteria and eligibility of these programs is slightly different from a regular M.Tech program. In this post, I would like to make clear the admission process, differences, pros and cons between these programs in brief.

Regular M.Tech Program

The most common program which is offered after GATE is M.Tech/ME in Engineering. This program is well structured, organized and definite timed base course. Student has to complete the minimum requirement of core courses offered by the department and the elective courses (can be from the same department or other department also) with minimum grade requirement.
This program is a 2 year course and under some adverse condition it can be extended for another 6 months (who fails to fulfill the minimum requirements for completing ME/M.Tech).
Mostly, the first year consists of coursework and second year is for the project and thesis. By the end of the fourth semester, the student has to submit a project report and/or thesis as per the department/institute stated guidelines.

Admission Process

The admission process is very straight forward. It is solely based on the GATE score only. There are many departments which allow for cross GATE score (for example, a student with GATE Mechanical Engineering (ME) can apply to Aerospace department for their M.Tech Aerospace Engineering program).
Some IITs may ask for additional suitability test and/or interview for cross GATE scores. There are some M.Tech programs which might require additional requirements of written test and/or interview.

Master of Science (in Engineering – by Research) / M.Tech (by Research)

MS in Engineering - by research is offered by IITM, IITK, IITKGP, IITD and M.Tech - by research is offered by IITB and IISc. The concept and the structure of both the courses is almost similar. These programs are like mini-Ph.D program where a student is focused on a particular area of research of his/her own interest.

Student is provided a Guide/Research Advisor (who will play a critical role during the whole program) as per his research interest and the requirement of the lab. The important point to remember is that the research interest of student as well as advisor should match so that at any point of time advisor can provide the guidance.

After selecting the advisor student undergoes general courses which are consistent with the research theme of the lab and student interest. The course work, literature review and problem definition is completed mostly within 2-3 semesters. The completion of research for the defined problem may take around 1.5 - 2 years after completing the coursework. The minimum criteria such as publication in peer review journals, national/international conferences as per advisor and IIT should be fulfilled for the successful completion of MS/M.Tech program by research.

Advantages

  1. This helps in developing problem solving capability on the cutting edge technologies.
  2. You would be working on the real time problem/project or futuristic problem/project.
  3. This will help you to develop the skills required for research-oriented jobs in labs and industries. You will be directly part of a scientific community where there will be a contribution from your end for the benefit of the society directly or indirectly in some way.
  4. The best advantage of these programs is that even with a lower GATE score, one can expect a call from IITs for admission.
  5. This will give you an essence/taste of a research program (such as Ph.D) at very early stage of your life which can help you to mould your career either in research field, academia or into industrial/service jobs accordingly.
  6. You can convert your MS program into Direct Ph.D. programs at any time during the course upon fulfilling the minimum criteria required to do so. This may help you in saving time if you intend to pursue Ph.D. after MS/M.Tech.
  7. You also get a chance for attending a fully funded national and international conference once during your stay at the institute.

Disadvantages

  1. These research programmes are independent of time. On an average, it takes around 3 years.
  2. You will be master of a particular subject or research area while a regular M.Tech student would have a broad and a generalized view about many areas as they undergo many graduate level courses in short period of time (2 years).

Admission Process

The admission process to these research-based Master programs is different from the regular M.Tech admission process.
The candidates are shortlisted for a written test and/or interview on the basis of GATE score with additional requirements such as BE/B.Tech score, projects, professional skills like programming, industrial software tools, projects done during BE/B.Tech etc.
The general rule is 70:30 weightage for interview and GATE score respectively.

Direct Ph.D. Program

The program is almost similar to the MS program with additional requirements such as 2-3 peer review publications with additional participation in national/international conferences (these requirements vary from advisor to advisor and institutes).

Admission process is also similar to the MS program. On an average duration of direct PhD program is about 5-6 years.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a nutshell, if you are looking for any direct job after your post graduation, then M.Tech will be a good choice.
If you are looking for a career in Research, then MS will give you a solid foundation. After MS from IITs, one can get fully funded Ph.D. in many foreign universities.

Doesn't mean that one doesn't get a job after MS. I got one.
