In this written test 70% weightage is given to gate score and 30% to the test. Details of the test are as follows:
Exam pattern :  The written test will be of two hours duration. The test is based on Mathematics and Basic Subjects of Undergraduate Engineering Program. Candidates have to attempt 5 questions. (2 compulsory Mathematics questions + 3 out of 8 in subject questions.)
Previous Exams contained questions of the following type.
  • Mathematics:  Questions were from complex number, Differential equations and matrices.
  • Basic Engineering: Fluid Mechanics – derivation of velocity flow field between two parallel plates.
  • Aerodynamics – Derivation of center of pressure for flow around cylinder.
  • Vibrations – Derivation of natural frequency for a system shown in figure.
  • Solid Mechanics – Derivation of principle stress for a system when the frame of reference is rotated by some angle.
  • Thermodynamics – Numerical to calculate work done by the system.
  • Control theory – Numerical to find the stability of a system.

Here are 2 PDFs which you can make use of while preparing.

  1. Download – Fluid Mechanics
  2. Download – Strength of Materials

All candidates must carry a photo-id and copy of original valid gate score card for verification of identity.
